Abstract

Adolescents in foster care often describe feeling disconnected from individuals around them. Youths report missing out on opportunities that most individuals their age take for granted. The purpose of this study is to show the benefits of recreational sports for adolescents in the foster care system. Sports can keep adolescents out of trouble, keep them healthy, introduce them to mentors and can provide opportunities for scholarships to college. “Participants believed that the program fostered feelings of "normalcy," offered a social network and emotional support for families, increased sport knowledge and skills, offered social support of peers, and was fun and enjoyable” (Zabriskie et al, 2005). Adolescents in the foster care system are not always able to do activities that others consider to be normal. There are rules that exist in the foster care system that may keep adolescents from activities such as playing sports. The result is that many adolescents in foster care not only feel different from their peers, they also miss out on opportunities to enjoy activities and to build skills and relationships. The researcher will conduct a literary analysis to show how recreational sports benefit adolescents in the foster care system.
