Abstract

An analysis of summer camp trends

Summer camps are a $2.8 billion industry with over 12,000+ summer camps in the United States (American Camp Association). With several different types of summer camps including 4-H, church, academic, sports, adventure, art, special needs and general camps, there is a camp for everyone. According to the American Camp Association, summer camps help children build self-confidence, self-esteem, social skills, and make friendships. Summer Camp increases campers’ independence and leadership skills in a safe and nurturing environment. Summer camps are evolving every year to keep up with the trends in today’s society. Innovative camps such as Space Camp, Epic Quest: Magic, Skills and Adventure and Natural Leadership and Wild Adventure are indicative of the movement of camps into more target specific markets. This study examines current trends in the delivery of summer camps including healthier food options, community service projects, going green, technology, programming structure, and adding adventure oriented programs and activities. The results of this study will provide a better understanding of what summer camps are doing to stay up to date with the changes in consumer preferences
