Abstract

The goal of this pilot study is to explore how speakers’ appearance influences listeners’ comprehension and processing of foreign accents. In particular, how the appearance of the speaker influences the listener’s rating of how accented the speaker is by connecting the visual and audio cues. Participants will rate how foreign or native the individuals look on a response bar ranging from -100 (Native) to 100 (Foreign). The ratings will be recorded with the mouse tracker program. This study is the second of three pilot studies. The purpose of these pilot studies is to create a corpus of sentences to investigate how visual and auditory information is processed. This research is important because two-thirds of the world speak English with a foreign accent, so most individuals will be exposed to foreign accents throughout their life.
