Abstract
As rates of elective cosmetic and dermatological procedures increase, it remains imperative for
aesthetic medicine providers to adequately screen potential patients for body dysmorphic
disorder (BDD). A psychiatric disorder, BDD presents when persons perceive flaws that are not
apparent to others, perform repetitive actions to examine and groom themselves which hinders
daily living activities, and require constant reassurance regarding their appearance. Literature
notes those with BDD seek elective cosmetic surgery at higher rates than the general population
resulting in poor satisfaction and outcomes. Cosmetic Procedure Screening (COPS) is a validated
screening tool for BDD and this quality improvement project sought to implement it after
providing psychoeducation for providers affiliated with an aesthetic provider non-profit
organization in Kentucky. A convenience sample of aesthetic medicine providers (N=9)
participated in this project and knowledge, confidence, and utilization rates were analyzed. Data
analysis demonstrated little statistical significance in increasing knowledge and confidence
(d=0.07). However, clinical significance was apparent as patients screened positive on the COPS,
collaboration between patient and provider increased, and mental health referrals were
recommended.
