Title of DNP Project: School Nurse Perceptions Toward Peers with Substance Use Disorder and Knowledge of Alternative-to-Discipline Programs

Abstract

This pilot project addresses existing barriers to the use of alternative-to-discipline programs for individuals with substance use disorder. It aims to identify and dispel these barriers through an educational program. The focus includes assessing knowledge, confidence, and perceptions of school nurses about their peers with substance use disorder and alternative-to-discipline programs. Given the rise in substance use disorder since the pandemic, the pilot project’s goals is to enhance understanding, increase confidence in dealing with individuals with substance use disorder, and positively impact perceptions. The two-phase pilot project utilizes qualitative data for program development and a pre-post survey in phase 2 to gauge improvements in knowledge, confidence and perception related to alternative-to-discipline programs and substance use disorder by 10% post-implementation of the evidence-based education program.
