Abstract
Recreation therapy for individuals with special needs living in personal care homes needs to be addressed in Kentucky. Personal care homes are community housing with non-professional support services with twenty-four hour supervision.. The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease. Recreation therapy uses dynamic therapies that impact the multiple dimensions of wellness for individuals. Recreation therapists use a patient-centered approach to reduce barriers and identify facilitators for physical, mental, and social well-being (Svarich, 2014). Recreation therapy provides physical and psychosocial health, cognitive functioning, and life satisfaction benefits. The purpose of this research is to identify the need for recreation therapy and related services in personal care homes. The addition of recreation therapy, in a personal care home will have a positive effect on the population of clients from a physical, mental, and social well-being standpoint.
