Abstract

The Ramsey Heat Plant at Eastern Kentucky University produced 429 tons of fly ash in 2014. The hauling fee for each ton produced is $20, where it is then sent to the landfill taking up valuable space. Fly ash is a result of the coal burning process. It is captured from the flue gasses before they leave the boiler. The purpose of this experiment is determine the feasibility of combining boiler fly ash, waste latex paint, and water to provide for a rigid mixture that is suitable to form paver blocks. Fly ash is currently used in concrete to make it stronger and more durable. Replacement of the cement with fly ash allows for a financial savings, as cement is the most expensive ingredient in a concrete mix. With the fly ash being very light, it will provide large weight reduction for ease of placement of the paver blocks. Latex paint will provide a stronger mixture as well as a simple way to add pigmentation to the pavers.

Current research has shown that this mixture of fly ash, water and paint alone could not sufficiently hold together, therefore cement powder is being added. The amount added will be small to allow for the highest use of recycled materials. Currently, each trial mix with the addition of cement has held up to initial setting with each mix having different properties of strength to weight. Further mixtures are in the works as well as using other compaction and curing methods. Final cylinder compression tests will reveal the ideal mix that suits the intended use.
