Abstract

A student panel discussion and reflection on revising an assignment from a simulation to an experiential learning activity will be presented. Student facilitators represent several majors and levels of undergraduate experiences which also allows modeling for roots of interprofessional collaboration. Students as teaching partners increases awareness of diversity and disability culture on the EKU campus.

Author Biography

Susan Skees Hermes, OTD, OTR/L, BCP, has 35 years of clinical experience working with all ages and populations. Her expansive areas of practice include mental health, inpatient/ outpatient rehabilitation, school based, home health, skilled nursing, education, and consulting. Dr. Skees Hermes is currently assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University.

Marie Manning, PhD., is an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University in Special Education. She has worked in the field for over 20 years in various educational and clinical settings. Currently, she teaches courses in learning and behavioral disorders including an overview of special education.

Julie Duckart, Ph.D., OTR/L, has over 20 years of experience as an occupational therapist and educator. Her areas of expertise include higher education, school based practice, research methods and assistive technology.

Student Facilitators: Sarah Barnes is a graduate student and graduate assistant in occupational therapy. Haley Boggs is a graduating senior who plans to continue her studies to be a speech/language pathologist. Roswell Manning is a graduating senior and plans to get his Masters in Psychology with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis. Margaret Woods is a rising junior in special education and specializes in Deaf and hard of hearing.
