Abstract
The hostel concept is relatively well-established in Europe, parts of Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, with millions of visitors and stays worth billions of dollars each year. However, in the United States, in spite of some of the best attractions around the world, and millions of both domestic and international visitors and travelers annually, hostel accommodation is still relatively under-developed. The current study examines the nature of the hostel industry in the United States, and attempts to understand why the hostel concept is relatively less-established in spite of the millions of travelers in the country. The study starts by examining the history of the hostel concept, and the hostel industry today in Europe and around the world where it is well-established. It then examines the challenges facing the hostel industry in the United States, and outlines how these challenges are being met, and how the industry is evolving and establishing itself in the United States.
