Abstract
In the Blood is a collection of creative non-fiction essays related to themes of belonging, identity, and expectation. As a nurse, working in a pediatric setting, some of the essays relate literally and specifically to blood, while others use the concept of blood as metaphor for who we are and where we come from. Part I is a series of observations that explore the nurse-patient relationship. Readers are invited into the hospital for a different perspective on health and healing, and the different approaches to what we teach, and what we learn. Part II is a collection of narratives related to the way medical professionals experience, absorb, and process the stories of healthcare. Part III looks at my health and wellness as it relates first to my body, then to my family as a unit, and then to my connection to the larger community.
