Abstract
Since small businesses play such a large role in Kentucky’s economy, this research project focused on the accounting needs of small businesses in the region of eastern and central Kentucky. This research identified accounting needs such as choosing a legal business entity, obtaining capital, understanding general accounting principles, understanding and adhering to accounting standards, meeting government standards, and implementing appropriate cost accounting procedures. Along with identifying accounting needs, the research for this project also ascertained what resources are available to assist small business owners in the region. Organizations in Kentucky that assist small business owners include the Eastern Kentucky University Business and Technology Accelerator Program (BTAP), the Center for Economic Development, Entrepreneurship and Technology (CEDET), the Kentucky Small Business Development Center (KSBDC), the Kentucky Innovation Network (KYIN) and the Innovation and Commercialization Center (ICC), the Kentucky One Stop Business Portal, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Kentucky Chapter of SCORE, and the Women’s Business Center of Kentucky (WBC). These resources can help small business owners address the accounting challenges discussed in this report.
