Abstract
This project is an in-depth look at the challenges facing higher education in the 21st century. Demographics in higher education are shifting away from the traditional student population to online adult degree seekers. The central argument of this thesis is as follows: colleges and universities must include or increase online program offerings to accommodate this rapidly growing student population. In addition to offering online degree programs, the programs offered should be innovative and adaptable in terms of course structure and resources available to the student. This paper also examines the significance of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and the potential impact they have on online courses.
