Abstract
Abstract: Mental health is a highly stigmatized topic in society today. This perpetuates not only a negative outlook on mental illness, but also affects how individuals with mental illness are perceived and treated both in an inpatient and outpatient setting. The purpose of this research project is to determine whether the portrayal of mental illnesses through various art forms can help alleviate stigmas towards mental health/mental illness in an aggregate of people. Scholarly literature regarding both art and mental illness separately and collectively will be analyzed. Conclusion: The portrayal of mental illness through art has been successfully used to alleviate stigmas towards mental illness within set populations and can be a useful tool in helping advocate for and promote awareness of mental illnesses and of mental health.
