Abstract
Trees and shrub species of a virgin forest in southeastern Kentucky are reported. Based upon data from 135 permanent plots, 26 families with 72 tree and shrub species are recognized. Calculated frequencies reveal that Fagus grandifolia and Acer rubrum are the most widely distributed species in the forest overstory. Fagus grandifolia, Acer saccharum, Cornus florida, Kalmia latifolia and Pylularia pubera are frequent tree and shrub species found in the understory. Relatively low frequency of most species suggests that most are either low in density or not evenly distributed over a dissected landscape characterized by diverse habitats.
