Measures of suicidal ideation have been included within both research and clinical settings to help medical and mental health professionals alike address and prevent suicide related deaths, especially since the rise of suicide as one of the leading causes of death in the United States. However, many people across different fields may wonder why they are using the measures that were recommended to them or want to know about other options to assess suicidal ideation. The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive overview of suicidal ideation measures that are being used in the U.S. to help identify individuals at risk. Inclusion criteria for these measures were set to narrow focus on measures that (1) were at least validated for usage with adult populations, (2) included a self-report version of the measure, and (3) had a related validation study published within the year 2020 and beyond. This overview included 24 unique measures of suicidal ideation. Explanations of the measures’ structures and their psychometric properties were provided for each measure, and the measures were organized into tiers to help emphasize the balance between pros and cons across the measures. The measures included among the top-tier across this overview were the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (Posner, 2007) and the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (Horowitz et al., 2012) due to their psychometric properties and generalizability.
