Abstract
Today, technology is an integral part of people’s lives of all ages, often taking them away from opportunities that encourage the development of the whole person. Technology is making its way into recreational camp settings changing the atmosphere from physical activity to sedentary experiences. Research indicates that camps are beginning to implement technology policies with the goal of encouraging campers to participate in a variety of active experiences. Some camps are allowing technology for use by campers while others provide technology time for campers. Camp provides opportunities that promotes physical fitness, character building, communication, and decision-making skills that encourage social and emotional growth. It is necessary to investigate the influence of technology on such outcomes. This study examines research on how technology is affecting the camp experience for young people. It compares camps that have technology policies with those who do not and evaluates if allowing technology usage among campers hinders the overall benefits that camps provide. The results of this study will provide a greater awareness to campers, parents and camp administrators as to the benefits and potential issues associated with technology usage at camps.
