Abstract
The importance of continued leisure and recreation in adults with developmental disabilities is often overlooked after a certain age. A survey performed in Kentucky found that in residents aging from 21-64, around 19.8% have a disability. An adult with developmental disabilities such as autism, behavior disorders, brain injuries, down syndrome, etc. may experience health issues in addition to their diagnosis such as seizures, physical limitations, sight/hearing disabilities, or strokes. These additional disabilities can cause the clients to not be able to live independently or know how to perform activities of daily living. It is important to enhance awareness of the programs and agencies that offer therapeutic services to adults therefore more Certified Recreation Therapists can provide wellness and a healthy lifestyle. The researcher will perform a qualitative analysis on the benefits of therapeutic recreation programs delivered by municipal recreation agencies for adults with developmental disabilities.
