Use of Portable Technology Among Ultramarathon Runners

Department

Recreation and Park Administration

Abstract

Portable technology, such as smartphones and GPS devices, have radically changed how outdoor recreation users experience the outdoors. Portable technology allows users to record and share their outdoor experiences, access and use digital maps while in the backcountry, and even document their paths on GPS mapping devices. Although research has established how certain outdoor recreation users engage portable technology, no research has examined how ultramarathon runners may use technology while engaging in ultramarathon races. In this study, the authors examine technology use among ultramarathon runners and their perceptions of technology use while running in ultramarathon events. This study provides a basis for future studies in technology and outdoor recreation as well as suggestions for communities where ultramarathon events may occur.
