Abstract

This poster will explain impact of the Service component of Accounting 322S (Individual Taxation) versus ACC 322 (non-service course). The ACC 322S students participate in service learning during the semester, in which they work with the IRS VITA program and Kentucky River Foothills to meet with clients in the community and prepare their taxes for free. This application of knowledge increases the level that students learn and understand tax preparation. More importantly, it enforces learning the content in a way that will allow them to explain the tax return preparation to the client.

This poster will report survey results from 2 student groups: students enrolled in the regular section of ACC 322 in Fall 2018, and students enrolled in the service-learning section of ACC 322S in Spring 2019. The poster will compare their responses to questions about general tax return information and their study habits.

Additionally, the news has indicated some discontent among taxpayers regarding the tax laws affecting taxpayers this year. This project seeks to examine the initial perceptions (before the tax return is completed) and reactions (after tax return is completed) to the tax law changes from the clients that come in for the tax preparation service. The poster will communicate their thoughts and reactions to their 2018 tax return, to gain an understanding of the perceived impact of the new tax code. No in-depth research has been conducted on taxpayer reactions to the new 2018 tax code, these results will give a starting point for further research.
