Abstract
As the population of diverse people increases all over the world, that population is also increasing in higher education. The goal of this study was to examine changes in awareness of privilege and oppression after participation in various multicultural education courses. Data were collected from two undergraduate student groups at a medium-sized public university. Pre and post test data were collected using The Awareness of Privilege and Oppression Scale-Second Edition (APOS-2, McClellan 2014) as well as a qualitative measure in which students provided feedback on their courses. The control group was made up of psychology students and the experimental group was made up of students enrolled in multicultural education courses. The results show that there were significantly higher gains in the APOS-2 for the diversity course group compared to the control group. The data collected can be used by those in higher education to change or improve curriculum in multicultural studies.
