Abstract

Almost everyone hears musical style. Non-musicians and musicians alike can identify a new song by their favorite band in just a few measures by certain musical elements alone. This has been true throughout music history. This Honors Program Creative Thesis* explores how musical style evolved throughout a two-hundred-fifty-year period. Music and its role in societies, an analysis of musical style periods and composers, and examples from each style are presented. Upon this foundation, three diverse melodies were arranged in the styles of four classical music eras – Baroque 1600-1750, Classical 1750-1800, 19th Century Romantic, and 20th Century. The three melodies include a folk melody called “To the Sky” by Carl Strommen, a Big Band tune called “In the Mood” by Joe Garland and Glenn Miller, and the 1976 song, “If You Leave Me Now” by the rock band Chicago. Characteristics of the four musical eras were applied individually to these three melodies. After applying the characteristics to the melodies, each was recorded as a brief keyboard solo in the styles of each of the four eras. The melodies were reimagined and recreated by choosing a new style for each!

This university presentation includes a poster displaying concise style characteristics of the four style periods, information about the three diverse melodies, and student provided media (recordings) of the melodies with new styles applied.
