Abstract
As the baby boomer generation ages, the demand for adult playgrounds has been increasing. This generation is more interested in fitness than previous generations. Due to the fact that they are aging, it is important that they find fitness that is functional, fun and easy to use. Many of these playgrounds are also multi-generational, which is a great way for families to spend time together.
Accessibility is important in building adult playgrounds. They must be in an area that is easy to access. They must contain a variety of features that encourages a well rounded workout. One must also consider the cost of these playgrounds. One way to ensure accessibility is to add to existing parks and ball fields that are already being utilized for other activities. This is a great way to get parents, grandparents, guardians and friends to exercise while others are also playing a sport or with friends. The cost can be absorbed by partnering with community fitness centers or hospitals.
Outdoor adult playgrounds are a great way for Americans to combat the obesity problem. As recreational professionals, we need to utilize all of our resources to help get more of these structures implemented and running. It takes a community to raise the money, build the playground, inform the community about this new option that is available to them to help members of the community to get healthy together while having fun.
