Abstract

Methylenetetrahydrofolatereductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme that plays a significant role in methylation— one of the most important metabolic pathways in the human body. This pathway controls various processes, such as DNA synthesis and the metabolism of folate and homocysteine. Mutations within the MTHFR gene are common among specific populations. These mutations are of concern because the MTHFR C(T)677T polymorphism can impose health risks due to reduced MTHFR enzyme activity and methylation. This study will discuss the role of the medical laboratory in diagnosing MTHFR polymorphisms and the relevance of the C(T)677T polymorphism within different disorders.
