Abstract
According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015) one in six individuals ages three to seventeen have one or more developmental disabilities in the United States. Inclusion is a significant obstacle that individuals with developmental disabilities are faced with. Equal leisure and recreation opportunities are not always granted for individuals with developmental disabilities as compared to able-bodied peers. Without the implementation of recreation therapy individuals may lack experience establishing personal and social connections needed to become more involved in the community. Participating in recreation and leisure reduces depression and anxiety; increases self-esteem, motivation, and confidence allowing the individual to become more independent. Through the following research, the benefits acquired from the utilization of recreation therapy and community inclusion among individuals with developmental disabilities will be thoroughly evaluated.
