Description

This capstone project focused on education and advocacy. The aim of my capstone project was to provide education to parents of eastern Kentucky (KY) about what Occupational Therapy (OT) can address with infants aged 0-18 months. I saw a gap in knowledge in the eastern KY community about what OT could do for infants and wanted to address this. Through my research, consultation with my mentors, and collaboration with the occupational therapists at my site (BPT) I discerned 14 areas of development and/or common reasons of needed referral for OT services by this age group. These educational materials aimed to not only educate parents about OT’s role in infant care, but to also advocate for children’s need for OT, to encourage parents/guardians to advocate for their child, and to advocate for the OT profession. An anonymous 5 question google forms questionnaire was also created to give insight into the usefulness of the handouts. 1 response was received with all positive feedback from a parent that had taken 6 of the different handouts. Many other parents took handouts as well in the course of the 2 weeks they were available at the site.
