The primary ACOTE focus area and practice setting for this Capstone was program development for a private practice sports therapy clinic through training and designing adaptive sports. The goal was to create program development to make a difference in my community by providing guidelines for therapists in the areas of studying, designing and evaluating small to large scale social transformation through the lens of viewing occupation as both a means and ends in changing situations of injustice.
This Capstone accomplished outreach for my site to become in tune with a population that they were once unfamiliar with and wasn’t able to offer the opportunity of services through the outpatient clinic setting by instead stepping out of the norm and engaging athletes on the field to provide therapy in a fun yet still beneficial setting. For myself, this Capstone unlocked opportunities for me to become more involved in my community by designing a future Miracle League for athletes who once didn’t have the opportunity to play on a level playing field that was designed for their unique abilities with the backing and support of an occupational therapist on their side. This project was able to meet the needs identified in my literature review and needs assessment as it demonstrated how occupations are creative and engagement in occupations are intrinsically motivated. This filled the gap identified in literature by allowing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in meaningful physical activity through adaptive sports.
