Description
This doctoral capstone project was completed at Frazier Neurorehabilitation Institute in Louisville, Kentucky, to address mental health in the inpatient rehabilitation setting. My primary ACOTE focus area was program and project development, with additional emphasis on education and advocacy related to mental health awareness. The purpose of this project was to create an online mental health toolkit that provides occupational therapists with resources to address mental health concerns with patients and caregivers during sessions. The online mental health toolkit consists of 11 main topics containing approximately eight interactive and educational pages in each folder to support therapeutic intervention. The literature review and needs assessment identified a lack of mental health resources addressing mental health in this setting, as physical health is often prioritized. The goal was to provide accessible, evidence-based, and user-friendly resource that support occupational therapists in their role of addressing a patient’s overall well-being.
Overall, this project provided Frazier Neurorehabilitation Institute with an evidence-based mental health resource that occupational therapists can use to support their patients and caregivers. This project increased awareness of mental health in inpatient rehabilitation. The literature and needs review indicated a need for accessible materials to address mental health in this setting. The mental health toolkit addresses these needs by providing interactive worksheets to increase patient participation, recovery, and quality of life. This project advanced occupational therapy by advocating for and addressing the importance of mental health awareness to improve recovery and quality of life.
