Abstract

The purpose of my study is to hopefully be able to research how athletes present their sexual orientation to the broader sports community and why. There has been research done examining how athletes deal with mental and emotional factors, and there have also been studies on how members of the LGBTQ+ community experience exclusion and discrimination. But, there was a gap in the research which is where I came up with my question. I wanted to see why athletes present their sexual orientation in the sports broader community and why they do it in that particular way. I will be collecting the responses to my study through a google form where the participant will have to fill out a consent or assent form. My study is exploratory, non-experimental, and qualitative design and approach. I anticipate that I may struggle with getting participants to be honest and open with their answers. My topic is very personal, so the participants may not feel completely comfortable sharing their true experiences. Another challenge I may have is the participants writing a good quality answer. My study and findings will be beneficial to players, coaches, athletic directors, and potential players of the sport. My study will be able to help these people because it can give them a deeper understanding of how players feel and why they feel that way in their sports community.
