Abstract

Understanding how music impacts the mind and body is a crucial part of music therapy. By researching the effect of music genre and tempo on heart rate, it will develop a greater understanding of the average listener's response to music and provide more information for further research. A quantitative experimental approach is used to establish a causal relationship between music genre and heart rate. A pre/post design was used to measure each participant's control as compared to their post heart rate after a 5 minute listening session for each music genre. Statistical analysis will be performed to determine if changes in heart rate for any genre were significant.
