Abstract

Work ethic refers to a collection of principles and values that guide an individual's behavior in the professional realm. It encompasses a range of attributes, including but not limited to integrity, responsibility, quality, discipline, and teamwork. When employees exhibit a strong work ethic, they are more likely to be viewed as reliable and trustworthy, which can enhance their reputation and lead to increased opportunities for advancement. Additionally, a company with a reputation for promoting a strong work ethic among its employees is likely to be viewed as a desirable employer, which can help attract top talent and drive overall success. Americans work 25% more hours, take less vacation time, and are retiring later relative to other workers throughout the world. Today data shows that the work ethic among many Americans has declined (Lappin, 2022). An interview conducted with an individual of Generation Z questioning how work environment has affected work ethic, the individual stated, “Working in an environment that is negative, unwelcoming, and making you feel as if you are not as important as other positions can really affect the efforts an individual has on their work.” Negativity in the workplace has been found to be the leading cause for individuals to leave their current jobs. For example, meaningless work, toxic work environments, inability to advance within the company, low salary, poor management, etc. An individual's work ethic plays a crucial role in determining their success in their career as it serves as a driving force behind their productivity, fosters a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in their work, and ultimately contributes to the growth and success of the organization they work for.
