Abstract

Adaptive Recreation is one of the most underrated departments of recreation. Research shows that youth with disabilities are at higher risk for other health issues because of their lack of access to adaptive recreation. The goal of this research is to find out how we as recreation professionals can better implement adaptive recreation for youth under 18. Leisure education and adaptive recreation are beneficial to the quality of life for youth with disabilities. There are unfortunately a lot of barriers that affect access to adaptive recreation for youth with disabilities. Finances, time and resources are the biggest barriers that families with disabled youth face when it comes to adaptive recreation participation. Recreation professional’s jobs are to implement adaptive recreation and provide access to resources and financial aid to families in need of help attaining it. By providing communities with access to grants and adaptive recreation opportunities, Recreation professionals are able to assist in bettering the quality of life for youth with disabilities. Participation in recreation and leisure is important in the development of physical, social and mental health for all children and youth. This is where Recreation professionals’ step in to implement adaptive recreation programs for youth with disabilities that are accessible for parents and caregivers with limited financials that limit their access to support systems for their children.
