Description
This doctoral capstone/ALE project was a quality improvement project completed at E.C. Shaw Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. The primary ACOTE focus area was health promotion and wellness, emphasizing the role of occupational therapy in improving sleep as an essential occupation that supports overall health, productivity, and quality of life. The goal was to determine participants’ current sleep satisfaction and determine what, if any, non-pharmacological interventions impact sleep quality among adults working full time jobs.
The literature review identified the importance of quality sleep and explored several pharmacological interventions and interventions specific for conditions.However, minimal evidence exists examining non-pharmacological factors for the general adult working population, therefore establishing a need for further exploration. The review of current literature influenced the development of the survey which 17 participants completed by tracking their sleep habits over three weeknights and two weekend nights while implementing non-pharmacological interventions of their choice. The survey consisted of twenty one questions regarding their sleep habits before and after the use of a non-pharmacological intervention of their choice while in their home environment. The survey responses indicated approximately 29% of participants reported improved sleep quality and fewer nighttime awakenings, while several participants also reported improved daytime energy and found the sleep log beneficial.
This capstone highlights sleep as an essential occupation that directly impacts the population’s overall well-being and occupational participation. By promoting evidence-based, non-pharmacological sleep interventions, the project reinforced occupational therapy's unique role in health promotion, prevention, and workplace wellness.
