This OTD Capstone project was completed under the mentorship of Maleea Miller, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, and EKU Occupational Therapy faculty mentor Dr. Sara Brito. The primary ACOTE focus areas included education, advocacy, and research. The purpose of this project was to increase ninth-grade students' awareness and understanding of occupational therapy as a healthcare profession and potential career pathway. A needs assessment and literature review identified limited student knowledge of OT, supporting the need for early career education and interactive learning experiences. The project consisted of an educational program incorporating a PowerPoint presentation, hands-on activities, case studies, group discussions, reflection exercises, and the development of a school-wide educational brochure. Students learned about OT practice settings, educational requirements, and the profession's role in promoting participation and independence across the lifespan. Project outcomes were evaluated using before and after questionnaires to measure changes in student knowledge. Results demonstrated improved student understanding of occupational therapy, including the ability to define the profession, identify multiple practice settings, describe the role of occupational therapists, and recognize OT as a potential career choice. Educational materials developed during the project provide sustainable resources for future students. This Capstone strengthened leadership, program development, advocacy, and educational skills while promoting occupational therapy within secondary education. The project provides an model that can be replicated in other schools to increase awareness of occupational therapy and support future workforce development.
