Description

This capstone project, completed at Marshall Pediatric Therapy, focused on developing structured, accessible resources to support caregiver engagement and improve consistency in pediatric feeding therapy, aligning with ACOTE’s emphasis on program development. Caregivers often feel overwhelmed by the fast pace of sessions and struggle to recall and implement strategies at home, where most feeding takes place (Carpenter & Garfinkel, 2021). To address this, I conducted a needs assessment, literature review, therapist interviews, and a SWOT analysis to guide the development of resources that improve carryover and caregiver confidence. Deliverables included a structured home program with a developmental feeding continuum, weekly food log, sensory-based food tracker, and a therapist-guided session outline. In-session tools such as a bite-size chart, food category visuals, descriptive adjective sheets, and food rating scales were also created to increase engagement in session. Educational materials included a caregiver handout, an OT vs. SLP comparison sheet, and a feeding supply reference guide with purchase links—all translated into Spanish for accessibility. Resources were piloted with therapists, revised based on feedback, and compiled into digital formatting that was shared with the full therapy team. Through this process, I demonstrated leadership by initiating collaboration, adapting materials to real-world needs, and advocating for inclusive, family-centered care. This project highlights the OT’s role in bridging the clinic and home environments, and the tools developed are adaptable for use across outpatient pediatric settings to support long-term therapy outcomes and improve caregiver confidence in feeding therapy practices.
